The Mexico mayor assassination of Temoac’s municipal leader has renewed concerns over political violence in the country. Armed attackers shot him dead inside the town hall. The attack came months after he survived an earlier assassination attempt.
According to The Guardian, armed attackers entered the municipal building on Wednesday. They opened fire, killing Valentín Lavín Romero, the mayor of Temoac in the central state of Morelos. The assailants reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle. Lavín Romero had survived a previous assassination attempt in January. Gunmen reportedly fired at him at a petrol station.
The latest Mexico mayor assassination has once again highlighted the dangers faced by local politicians in areas affected by organised crime and rival criminal groups.
Mexico Mayor Assassination Highlights Political Violence
The murder of Lavín Romero marks the 14th killing of a mayor since Claudia Sheinbaum became president in 2024. According to figures published by The Guardian, criminals have killed nearly 100 mayors in Mexico since 2006. The figures highlight the long-standing threat these officials face.
As of yet, there is no confirmation of the motive behind the murder of the mayor. Authorities have not identified those behind the attack either. However, authorities had previously linked the politician’s career to allegations involving organised crime. Authorities arrested the mayor’s mother-in-law in 2025 over alleged connections to the Los Aparicio organised crime group and kidnapping charges. In addition, there have been calls for the investigation of the allegations against Lavín Romero and two activists’ murders.
Just earlier in the year, a banner had appeared accusing the mayor of backing rival gangs. Authorities have not proven any of the allegations. They have yet to confirm whether any of them are connected to the attack that killed the mayor. Investigators will closely examine the circumstances of the shooting. They will determine whether political motives or organised crime drove the attack.
Mexico Faces Growing Threat to Local Officials
Moreover, the Mexico mayor’s murder case reveals the bigger security problem that local leaders have to address. Local politicians can be a target for criminal organisations trying to gain more control over state contracts, police, local budgeting, etc. The issue becomes even more alarming in the territories where there are many competing criminal organizations that try to gain even more influence.
