Remember the 2019 GMMTV series The Gifted? If you haven’t watched it yet, this is your sign. The Gifted stands out as one of GMMTV’s most detail-oriented series. Let’s review.
Ritdha Wittayakom High School offers a Gifted Program. Through this program, the school administration selects a handful of exceptional students for special classes. Surprisingly, Pang, a tenth-year student from the lowest academically ranked class, passes the Gifted Program placement test. As Pang enters the Gifted Program, confusion surrounds him, and he and his new friends soon realize that something about their new class is not quite right.
Foreshadowing in The Gifted
Pang’s (Nanon) power is the most obvious foreshadowing done in the series. When Pang joined the “Gifted” program, he realised quickly that it wasn’t a normal class. It had something to do with.. superpowers? As he struggles with the class, he grows more distant towards Nac, his best friend. What’s more, Nac seems to have grown jealous of Pang’s status upgrade.
Both friends have a huge fight and Pang, in a fit of rage, yells at Nac to never talk to him ever again. Surprisingly, he never does. Eventually Pang and the audience find out that the reason behind Nac’s inaction was Pang’s power! That made Pang one of the first ones in class to activate his powers, whether it be intentional or not.
Minor Details In The First Few Episodes
- The First Gifted Student: While trying to steal the papers for the M4 test, we can see a shot of the photo frame of the first Gifted program student with the director. This is when Nac tries to persuade Pang to steal the question paper while Pang suggests on going back. This, eventually, becomes one of the important clues for the Gifted mid term exams.
- Wave breaks one of the rules of the Gifted class constantly through the first half of the program. During the orientation class for the gifted program, Mr. Pom shows the students a slide on the rules that are to be followed in the Gifted class. One of the rules explicitly state: Respect each other. However, Wave always talks down to others, breaking that rule almost every episode.
- Mr. Pom’s metronome: One of the mysteries in the series was Mr. Pom’s powers. Around episode 11, Pang figures out that it was memory erasure and that he needs a metronome to help him control that power. In the first episode, while Pang remembers incidents of his classmates being extraordinary, we can see the metronome ticking in the back.
Rewatch Gems in The Gifted
Watching the whole series is one type of experience. Rewatching, is another. Some of the scenes, interactions, and details are more apparent, and or interesting while rewatching the series. A few of these are:
- The relationship of Pang and Wave. Their dynamic with each other is an interesting watch since both turn from the worst of enemies to the only person the other one can trust along the way. Wave’s first dialogue to Pang is asking him to clean his shoes. In contrast, his words to Pang towards the end of the series are: “Took you long enough. Are you ready?”, welcoming him back to the class after Mr. Pom erased his memories.
- Rewatching the series, we notice that in the M4 tests, it is the Room 1 students that eventually get into the program hearing the “secret message”. We see Namtarn, Wave, Ohm and Claire in just a few shots.
- Going back to Mr. Pom’s powers, rewatching the series, we can really point out to the moments where he uses them. Ohm’s friend losing his memories after being exposed to his powers, Namtarn forgetting the revelation of Chanon’s discovery, Nac forgetting the hysterical gym episode and many more.
Overall, the series is a must watch, and has a great rewatch rate by audience.
