Not Friends: Not The Usual Start To A Friendship
Not Friends is a tale of a group of students who set out to make a short film based on the life of a classmate. However, they discover a secret that could change their vision of filmmaking forever. Sounds interesting?
Transferred to a new school before graduation, Pae is sat next to Joe, who considers Pae a friend straight away. A short while after, Joe is killed in a car accident and the school is in mourning. Faced with working for his father if he fails his university entrance exam, Pae learns he can avoid this if he enters a film school short film competition instead.
Consequently, Pae decides to make a film on Joe by using a short story Joe wrote that won a story writing competition. So, he fakes his “friendship” with the late Joe. Pae manages to acquire funding for the project from the very money Joe won in the competition!
Incredible Suspense: Who Was Joe?
One of major plot line of the story is Pae trying to find out what kind of a person Joe was in real life. But he only gets the generic kind of information. His birthday, how many siblings he has or what kind of manga he used to read.
That’s when he remembers the hard drive that he had of Joe’s short story. He can use it to win the competition! As he moves forward with the short story, he realises that he won’t be able to make this film alone. He comes across Bokeh, Joe’s childhood friend, who immediately catches that Pae’s lying about the whole thing.
Thus, we, as audience, still don’t know what kind of a person Joe was, except for the narrative that the short story gives. Eventually, Joe and Bokeh make a team of students who start working on the short film. While making the film, they discover some secrets of Joe that change their perspective on their classmate.
Not Friends: The Friends We Made Along The Way
After the reveal of the disturbing truth, Pae and Bokeh fight. One still wants to believe in Joe, the other, wants to respect the true owner of the short story. The hard drive breaks. Pae comes back at square one. What can he do?
However, the story doesn’t hide the messy parts of these student’s mentality. Pae only started caring for Joe because he wanted to get into the competition and not study. Bokeh and Joe’s friendship had ended because of a misunderstanding. Ohm and Joe’s friendship wasn’t perfect either.
Not Friends shows us the real side of friendship. We make mistakes, we betray each other, we make each other cry, and yet, we stay together.
Not Friends is a tale of a group of students who came together under rather unusual circumstances. It is about the friendship that they built along the journey of their short film making. It is definitely worth a watch!
