Dowry-related deaths, mental harassment, and pressure surrounding childbirth continue to disproportionately affect women. For centuries, society confined women to the domestic sphere. Although laws have strengthened over time and social attitudes have evolved, domestic and physical violence against women remains a persistent issue. Moreover, many cases of domestic abuse in India still go unreported. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), authorities record more than 320 cases of cruelty by husbands or relatives every day. They also register around 16 dowry-related deaths daily. As these incidents continue to surface, the mysterious death of former Miss Pune, Twisha Sharma, has emerged as one of the latest cases to draw public attention.

About the Death of Former Miss Pune
Former Miss Pune and MBA graduate Shubhangi Singh married Samarth Singh in December 2025. She came from a well-educated family and had recently started a new chapter in her life. Her husband works as a lawyer, and her mother-in-law is a retired judge. However, tragedy cut short her aspirations at her marital home. On the night of May 12, family members found her hanging in a room of the house. Authorities have conducted two post-mortem examinations so far, and investigators continue to examine the case.
Her family has alleged that she was subjected to mental harassment and has questioned whether her death was a case of suicide or murder. According to them, she was repeatedly pressured to transfer shares and investments worth nearly ₹20 lakh, gifted to her by her father, to her husband’s family. Her brother further alleged that she was emotionally harassed during her pregnancy and was pressured to terminate it against her wishes. The Economic Tiimes reported her brother’s claim. He stated
“In her pregnancy, my sister wanted to continue with the child and become a mother. However, she was allegedly put under immense pressure by her husband and in-laws to undergo an abortion.”
Sources close to the investigation have stated that she had shared messages with friends expressing distress in the days leading up to her death. Reports also suggest that she had attempted to book a ticket to Noida and had made calls to her mother shortly before the incident. Friends have described her as a strong source of support and encouragement in their lives.
Statement by the Former Miss Pune’s In-Laws
Meanwhile, her husband’s family has attributed the incident to her deteriorating mental health. In an interview, her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, reportedly described changes in her behaviour after marriage and denied allegations of dowry demands. She stated that the former beauty queen highly regarded her husband before marriage, but later changed her attitude towards the family.
