Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has officially resigned from his post on July 21, 2025. He has stated that he needs to prioritize his health. Writing a letter to Hon’ble President Droupadi Murmu, he explains that medical advice has prompted him to step away from his duties. Dhankhar had assumed office in August 2022. He was also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. His resignation came as a surprise, especially since it occurred during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. This marks only the third time in India’s history that a Vice President has stepped down before completing the full term.

Mixed Response
However, many believe there may have been political reasons behind his decision. Few days prior, Dhankhar had accepted a motion from the opposition to begin impeachment proceedings against a sitting Supreme Court judge. He did this without consulting the central government, which reportedly caused tension. Soon after, senior ministers met with Rajya Sabha members, and within hours, Dhankhar resigned. While his letter focused on health reasons, the timing raised questions about whether political pressure played a role.
What Happens After The Vice President Has Resigned?
His resignation comes at a time when Parliament is already facing many important discussions and debates. Some people believe his sudden decision could affect how things work in the Rajya Sabha. It also raises questions about whether there were problems within the government. The country awaits to see how the change will affect the Parliament and its work in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha will handle the Vice President’s responsibilities. According to the Constitution, there is no interim Vice President. Therefore, the Deputy Chairman will preside over sessions until a new one is elected. The Election Commission has already started the process, and the country is expected to have a new Vice President by the end of August 2025. This transition period will be closely watched, as the new Vice President will also play a key role in maintaining order and balance in the Rajya Sabha during a politically sensitive time.
