Hemant Kumar, originally known as Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, is a name that often evokes an image of a quintessential dhoti-clad ‘Bhadrolok’ wrapped in a shawl, with a determined and stern face. This name will remain forever etched in the Indian music industry.
Most Gen Zs might not be familiar with this image or even the name. But he had a profound influence on contemporary artists such as Kumar Sanu, Arijit Singh, and Papon. Papon even proposed the idea of reviving the music of S. D. Burman (another legend) and Hemant Kumar for this era, complementing it with some new additions.
Musical Superstar Arijit Singh emphasised that while singing any track of ‘Hemant Kumar’, one needs to ensure to keep the emotional purity intact.
Hemant Kumar ruled an era (50s, 60s), whether in Bollywood or the Bengali Industry, working closely with Salil Chowdhury, Lata Mangeshkar, and S. D. Burman, among others. His association with “IPTA” [a platform for like-minded artists coming together] paved his career. This organisation was created as a result of many significant factors, including the inaction of British authorities and Wealthy Indians during the 1943 Bengal Famine. Here, he developed his long partnership with Salil Chowdhury.
How does Hemant’s legacy matter today?

Hemant Kumar was an era in himself. On his distinctive compositions and unique style, numerous studies have been conducted. In the era where there are controversies regarding the ticket prices, His unique journey with ‘IPTA’ stands as a testament to today’s musicians and artists in general that they all have a moral obligation towards society too.
He was also a master in mic positioning. The way he used to hold his mic in different ways and positions is a guide to many performers. Even today, especially when someone is performing for a huge crowd. Musicians have also shown their influence clearly when they blend emotional depth with classical richness into their creations, much like Hemant Kumar did in his time.
Hemant Kumar also tried his hand at Movie Production, where he experimented with different genres just as he did with his music. “Bees Saal Baad”, starring Biswajeet, was one of the notable ones among his film productions. Hemanta Babu was also very popular among his contemporaries due to his generosity and kind behaviour. This grounded nature helped his voice reach the middle-class people.
‘Jibonmukhi’, a Genre, was considered to be very underrated during that era. It talked about the social conditions of the common people and their lifestyle. Salil Chowdhury with Hemant Kumar were the early pioneers of this genre. Indeed, Hemant Kumar’s journey and contributions will always remain etched, leaving an enduring imprint on the Indian music and film industries.
