NT’s Core Election Issues: Health and Economy
Two key challenges are expected to dominate the election: remote healthcare and economic diversification.
Around 7 million Australians, about 28% of the population—live in rural and remote areas, according to the ABS (2023h). Many of these communities face serious difficulties due to their geographic isolation. Health outcomes in these regions are generally worse than in urban areas.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that people in remote zones have higher rates of hospitalizations, injury, and death. They also face limited access to primary health care compared to those in major cities.
Data show that people living in rural and remote areas have higher rates of hospitalizations, deaths and injury and also have poorer access to, and use of, primary health care services, than people living in Major cities, says Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Beyond the promises
The current government has promoted solutions like telehealth and mobile clinics. However, these services often fall short due to limited funding and poor infrastructure.
Many believe the administration has struggled to meet the needs of remote communities. Critics point to a lack of culturally sensitive approaches and low investment in rural areas. True progress will require more than stopgap measures. It calls for a deeper strategy that addresses distance, staff shortages, and cultural gaps.
