Japan’s ruling conservative party has chosen Sanae Takaichi as its new leader, paving the way for the 64-year-old to become the country’s first female prime minister.
Breaking Japan’s Century-Old Barrier
From TV Personality to Political Powerhouse
Takaichi, a former TV host and heavy metal drummer, has risen to lead Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Dubbed “Japan’s Iron Lady,” she built her strength on conservative views and close ties to the late Shinzo Abe. She rallied the party’s right wing amid waning public support.
Takaichi defined her path to the LDP presidency through persistence after losing twice before. In 2021, her first leadership bid ended early in elimination. In 2024, she gained momentum, leading the first round but losing the runoff to Shigeru Ishiba. Finally, in 2025, on her third attempt, she triumphed—winning a runoff against Shinjiro Koizumi after Prime Minister Ishiba resigned following the party’s electoral setbacks.
Challenges Ahead for Japan’s New Leader

If Takaichi becomes prime minister, she will face several immediate and long-term challenges, including economic strain, a fragmented political landscape, and tense diplomatic relations.
Takaichi must now secure cooperation from key opposition parties to govern effectively. Takaichi’s ultra-conservative positions, including her hawkish stance on immigration and frequent visits to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, could jeopardize the LDP’s 26-year coalition with the moderate Komeito party.
She must address rising prices and stagnant wages to regain public support for the struggling LDP. Her platform emphasizes boosting Japan’s economic security in areas like AI, semiconductors, food, and energy. Takaichi faces major economic challenges, including an aging population and fiscal deficits. Her mentor Abe largely avoided addressing these issues.
A Defining Moment for Japan’s Future
As October 15 approaches, Japan stands at a crossroads — between preserving its political traditions and embracing a new era of leadership.
Whether Sanae Takaichi’s tenure transforms Japan or reinforces its conservative roots, one fact is clear: her election has already rewritten the story of Japanese politics.
