Officially released in 2006, this 1987 recording is a stand-out in Hiroshi Yoshimura’s catalogue. Explore “Flora” in all its glory, and see the magic of the artist’s discography!
Born in Yokohama, Japan in 1940, Hiroshi Yoshimura started to learn piano at the age of 5. Navigating his journey through music, the artist was fondly inspired by the Fluxus movement. As many attribute its proliferation to the work of John Cage, the movement brought about an extensive focus on experimental weigh-ins over traditional formulae.

“Experimental” does not even scrape the surface of Yoshimura’s extensive repertoire, as he truly is a pioneer in his space. Moreover, lying in the minimalist genre of kankyō ongaku, or environment music, the artist integrates natural imagery to the ears. Consequently, soft electronic melodies infused with the sounds of nature make for a novel experience.

In 2025, his record Flora has been reissued for release 22 years following Yoshimura’s passing. Perhaps, in a bittersweet sense, the artist gauged a more prominent status not as he lived, but posthumously. The 2025 reissue is a testament to this.
The record is a chronological follow-up to his 1986 works Green and Surround. Intriguingly, this was the first time the album was available on vinyl and cassette, marking it as one filled with nostalgia from those who belonged to the era.
Reissued on 20th March this year, the album has sought the eyes (and ears) of listeners across generations, living in an age that triumphs ambient sound.
