Tech billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates has publicly apologised to staff at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for his past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling his time with the disgraced financier a “huge mistake” and stressing that it had unfairly cast a shadow over the foundation’s work.
During a foundation town hall meeting this week, Gates acknowledged that his interactions with Epstein first begun in 2011, years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction were poor judgment. He told employees that he “did nothing illicit” and “saw nothing illicit” while interacting with Epstein, and reaffirmed that he never spent time with Epstein’s victims.
Bill’s Apology Delivered at Foundation Meeting

Gates, offered a formal apology over the same that he deeply regretted meeting Epstein after his conviction and recognised the negative impact of those interactions. He affirmed he had not engaged in any illegal conduct, but admitted that poor judgment allowed the association to persist longer than it should have.
Gates also apologised to his colleagues who faced scrutiny because of the decisions that he personally made during earlier philanthropic discussions. He stated that, he accepts full responsibility for the controversy and reaffirmed his commitment to transparency in professional and personal conduct.
Renewed Scrutiny After Document Releases
Public attention intensified after newly released documents related to Epstein revived questions about past connections with influential global figures. This disclosures not only accused Gates of criminal wrongdoing, but also it increased the media scrutiny surrounding his past meetings with the disgraced financier.
Gates clarified that, he met Epstein primarily to discuss philanthropic initiatives focused on global health and development priorities. He stressed that those discussions never resulted in formal partnerships or financial relationships involving the foundation’s program.

The foundation also confirmed that Epstein never held any official role within its institutional structure or operational decision-making framework. Leaders emphasised that, the organisation continues its global health mission despite renewed controversy surrounding Gates’ earlier personal choices.
