In the era of genre-bending melodies, Alfonso Peduto emerges as a novel composer. His ideas go beyond categorical classification, as he embeds the European tradition with American minimalism. In his latest collection, Binary Data, Vol. 3, Peduto bridges the gap between science and art.
Who is Alfonso Peduto?
Peduto holds a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Composition and Music Technology from Berklee College of Music. He holds a Master’s degree in Classical Composition. Moreover, he received a Bachelor’s degree and in Physics and Mathematics from University of California at Berkeley. Consequently, this intersection of paradigms finds its way into his music; one that applies mathematical devices to repetitive motifs.
The musical style of minimalism champions this approach, as small cellular ideas are embellished without much deviation. Moreover, by making use of layers on top of the minimalist elements, Peduto blends waves in what seems to become borderline environmental.
The composer’s music has been utilised by multiple ballet productions including the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Kansas City Ballet, and at the Florence Dance Festival. Furthermore, through his explorations of Yamaha’s Disklavier since 2021, the composer has become a one-man ensemble of sorts. Listen here:
Binary Data, Vol. 3
With his latest release, he adds onto his discography extensively with a stark 15 track-long album. Binary Data, Vol. 3 is the third of its kind, extending the Binary tracks from XIX to XXXIII. Almost all of Peduto’s music envelopes around the central idea that is his signature motifs. So, as he layers using real-time delays, his music becomes much fuller and the experience, more enriching.
There’s not much online on the composer and his music, apart from a review or two, and his personal website. Regardless, it certainly is refreshing to hear innovation in the musical landscape, as more artists integrate their personal motivations into it.
Mathematics is an integral part of composition — from complex time signatures and polyrhythms, to intonation and inversions. Alfonso Peduto utilises these elements and amasses an audience that has never before lived such an experience.
