
Richard Smallwood, a Gospel and Grammy nominated singer has died at the age of 77. Born on November 30, 1948 in Atlanta, Smallwood was an eight- time Grammy-nominated gospel singer and songwriter whose influence shaped contemporary gospel music,
His family confirmed and announced his passing on the artist’s Instagram page on December 31st. “We are grateful for the overwhelming love and support during this difficult time,” the statement read. “Your tributes are a testament to Richard’s reach and impact. Please continue to keep his family, friends, the music community, and all those affected by this loss in your prayers.”
His representative told Variety that the singer passed away on December 30 due to complications related to kidney failure at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Ashton-Sandy Spring, Maryland.

Smallwood was an extraordinary and highly accomplished musician. He began playing piano at the age of five, and by the age of 11, he had formed is own gospel group. He earned his degree in music from Howard university and later became a member of the school’s first gospel ensemble, The Celestials.
After graduating, he formed Richard Smallwood singers in 1977. The group featured Dottie Jones, Jackie Ruffin and Darlene Simmons. Their album psalms, released in 1984, peaked at No.1 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart. This success earned the group their first grammy nomination for Best Soul Gospel performance by a Duo or Group.
Following the disbandment of Richard Smallwood singers in early 1990s, Smallwood formed a large backing choir known as Visions. Their song “trust me” reached No. 9 on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs Charts and earned Smallwood his final Grammy Nomination in 2012.
Over a career spanning more than 5 decades, Smallwood received numerous nominations and awards, His worked was also performed by major artists such as Whitney Houston( “I love the lord”), and Destiny’s child( “Total Praise), among others.
Smallwood also released his autobiography, Total praise: The Autobiography named after his signature song and most celebrated songs.
Richard Smallwood leaves behind a powerful legacy that inspired many generations. His music deeply influenced countless artists, and the industry mourns the loss of true pioneer whose work will continue to resonate for years to come.
