A decade after Reply 1988 first aired, the cast has reunited for a special anniversary event. The three-episode special will air on tvN on December 19th at 8:40 pm (KST). To film the episodes, the cast took a two-day trip to Gangwon-do. Most of the main actors, such as Lee Hyeri, Park Bo Gum, Go Kyung Po, Lee Dong Hwi, Sung Dong Il, Ra Mi Ran, and more, will be part of the episode. Earlier, there were reports that Ryu Jun Yeol could not join due to scheduling issues. It was later confirmed that although he could not attend the full MT schedule, he still joined the filming in honour of the tenth anniversary.
For those unaware, Reply 1988 is a global hit drama that tells the story of five friends who live in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul. It is the third installment of the Reply anthology series, after Reply 1994 and Reply 1997. Shin Won Ho directed the series, while Lee Woo Jeong flawlessly wrote it. It was the highest-rated drama on Korean cable television at the time of airing, peaking at 18.8% nationwide. Critics credited the show with blurring the lines between cable dramas and those produced by major broadcasters.
What Makes Reply 1988 a Cult Favourite?
Unlike many dramas, the series did not feature time travel, a wealthy CEO, or a villain. Still, it built a cult following over the years. The story brings viewers back to the 90s, a time before the internet and smartphones. It focuses on a neighborhood where people came together to celebrate the success and withstand the difficult times. The show starts with an interview of Deok Sun (Lee Hyeri) with her husband, using frequent flashbacks to tell the story. The mystery of which of the four boys became her husband was a major talking point. Throughout the series, the mystery kept fans engaged and guessing until the end.
Performances That Felt Real

One key to the show’s success was the chemistry and acting among the cast. Despite having a large ensemble, there were no weak performances. The main five friends, Lee Hyeri, Park Bo Gum, Ryu Jun Yeol, Go Kyung Po, and Lee Dong Hwi, shared believable camaraderie and friendship. Park Bo Gum played Choi Taek with innocence. Lee Hyeri brought energy to Deok Sun, and Ryu Jun Yeol gave Kim Jung Hwan a quiet charm. Before Gwan Sik appeared, many saw Choi Taek as the ideal ‘green flag’ character. The talented supporting cast also did a tremendous job, and realistically portrayed the families of each main character.
Reply 1988 and the Beauty of Ordinary Family Life

The portrayal of family relationships was remarkably authentic. The love-hate relationship between sisters, the sense of being overlooked as a middle child, and the subtle gestures of love within the family are heartwarming and relatable. Scenes like a father wearing shoes his eldest daughter bought, even though they do not fit. A son eating his mother’s cooking, even when it is not tasty, shows the gentle warmth of family life.
The quiet bond between the single father and Choi Taek, and the way adults cope with losing a parent, is shown with real depth and care. The chemistry between the three mothers played by Ra Mi Ran, Lee Il Hwa, and Kim Sun Young is another standout aspect of the super-hit drama. Their friendship, daily talks, struggles, sharing food, and helping each other without words were among the few well-portrayed female friendships on screen.
A Journey Back to What Matters
Reply 1988 is like a stroll down memory lane, a show where each character feels like someone we know and care about. In today’s busy world, the show asks us to pause and enjoy the little things before growing up. As the cast gathers again under Na Young Seok’s direction, viewers can look forward to nostalgia. It’s also a reminder of why this story about ordinary families continues to hold extraordinary meaning after all these years.
